چکیده

Address for correspondence: Mr P M Davison, Bangour General Hospital, Broxburn, West Lothian Acute neonatal gangrene is an uncommon but devastating event. It may follow the adjustments in circulation that occur after birth, which may lead to an embolus arising from a thrombus within the ductus arteriosus or from an extension of an umbilical artery thrombosis. ' Arterial blood sampling2 and compression during delivery can both result in acute neonatal gangrene, and the condition also occurs in babies with sepsis, dehydration, and polycythaemia.

Cardioprotective and prognostic effects of remote ischaemic preconditioning in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: a single-centre randomised, double-blind, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Remote ischaemic preconditioning has been associated with reduced risk of myocardial injury after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. We investigated the safety and efficacy of this procedure. METHODS Eligible patients were those scheduled to undergo elective isolated first-time CABG surgery under cold crystalloid cardioplegia and cardiopulmonary bypass at the West-German ...

Late-preterm birth, maternal symptomatology, and infant negativity.

The present study examined infant negativity and maternal symptomatology by term status in a predominately low-income, rural sample of 132 infants (66 late-preterm) and their mothers. Late-preterm and term infants were group-matched by race, income, and maternal age. Maternal depression and anxiety symptoms were measured with the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (BSI-18) when infants were 2 and 6 mon...

A Role for H2S in the Microcirculation of Newborns: The Major Metabolite of H2S (Thiosulphate) Is Increased in Preterm Infants

Excessive vasodilatation during the perinatal period is associated with cardiorespiratory instability in preterm neonates. Little evidence of the mechanisms controlling microvascular tone during circulatory transition exists. We hypothesised that hydrogen sulphide (H2S), an important regulator of microvascular reactivity and central cardiac function in adults and animal models, may contribute t...

Is there a role for ischaemic conditioning in cardiac surgery?

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is the revascularisation strategy of choice in patients with diabetes mellitus and complex CAD. Owing to a number of factors, including the ageing population, the increased complexity of CAD being treated, concomitant valve and aortic surgery, and multiple comorbiditi...

Remote ischaemic preconditioning reduces myocardial injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cold-blood cardioplegia: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) induced by brief ischaemia and reperfusion of the arm reduces myocardial injury in coronary artery bypass (CABG) surgery patients receiving predominantly cross-clamp fibrillation for myocardial protection. However, cold-blood cardioplegia is the more commonly used method world wide. OBJECTIVE To assess whether RIPC is cardioprotective in CABG...
